Welcome to  the February edition of  Makin Shavins

This month saw  a return to the club of  our old friend  Mark Baker.

The  first professional demo of the year  was  a close call as we found out on Sunday when many of us awoke to find The snow had fallen making travelling a bit hazardous.

The next item  is for all members  we need you  The first club demonstration of 2012 is on the Friday the 9th & Saturday 10th March at the

Those who went to the first show last year  will no what a great  event this was

So its up to you, we need you to come along for as long as you can over the two days we also need members who are willing to turn at least have a go not just leave it all to  B. J  and Denis . So come along get your name down with the club Secretary to say when you are available , phone our email .

The next monthly meeting is Simon Hope  is is unusual to have professional  demo’s back to back but this is due to Easter and his availability.

Onto this months Demo and as usual Mark  has something  different  each time

 This time was no different

Mark started of with this large pre  turned

Ash Bowl blank . As you can see it was first

tuned in October  2003 and had gone well out of

Shape.

Marks first task was to reshape the chucking

Points on the bottom as seen here

Once the bowl was stable and the chucking points reshaped to fit the chuck jaws again his next task was to reshape the outside of the bowl

Starting at the chucking point working towards the outer rim

Notice the worm hole this was later removed

Next was to refine the outer shape as seen below

   Here we see Mark pointing

 out the profile

Of the negative rake  grind to some of the new members of the audience

The next task was to remount the bowl on new chucking point and turn the inside

Here Mark refines  the bowl edge with a negative rake scraper before finishing

of the inside of the bowl

Here Mark puts the finishing touches to the inside of the bowl finishing the bottom with a standard grind bowl gouge.

This was then put to one side  so he can remove foot later

The next project started of with a small sycamore blank turned to a bowl shape here we see Mark setting out the foot which is reversed after the outer shape has been  achieved  by using a beading tool

This small bowl was then used to help remove the chucking point from the large bowl. Here we see one of the members helping out with the bowl.

Here we see the finished bowl

Ready for the final sanding and finish this will be by a club member  thanks to Mark for  donating it to the club.

Back to the small bowl Mark used a large Sorby slicing tool

Here we see the final result

Mark then went on to show us some of his colouring  using a copper colour inside the bowl  (acrylic ) paint by Joe Sonjas  it made a big impact on the bowl  similar to the one seen here

Mark them went on to apply a green verigris wax to the outside of the bowl

With a toothbrush so the application got right into the grooves

Once this had dried off it was buffed away to give the bowl the old look that is seen on bronze statues

Next Mark went on to explain how different stands

Change the look of the overall piece from a platter balanced on a  pyramid point   here are some of the examples.

The Final Piece of the day was an Burr hollow form

Mark started off making a chucking point at both ends

And rough shaping the form

This hollow form  was made buy parting the blank into two halves hollowed out re glued

Then reshaped  to give this nice vase

Note the banding to cover the join

What a great day again from Mark we hope all went away with something  replicate in there workshops

We all look forward to seeing Mark back again soon

Well thats all for this month  just to finish on one note and that is to say a big thanks
